Two UGs killed by IE Commandos

Imphal, February 02 2010: Two unknown undergrounds were gunned down on Tuesday afternoon by a team of Imphal East Police Commandos near a Tasar Farm at Lairou Chnigkhong, five kilometer southeast of Iribung police station in Imphal east district.

One M-16 with three magazines containing 60 live rounds, two AK-56 with six magazines loaded with 180 live rounds, one lathod gun with 20 lethod bomb shells in it and one hand grenade were recovered by the police from the possession of the slain undergrounds.

Police said they were killed in a gunfight that lasted for about half an hour with a team of Imphal East Police Commandos who rushed to the area this afternoon at about 1.50 pm.

The gunfight erupted when the police commando team in four vehicles was conducting search operation in the area returned were fired upon from near the farm.

The commando team was moving towards the farm house after conducting search operations at two houses of the Lairouching village, police said.

The police team instantly returned the fire resulting in a heavy exchange of fire for about one an hour, said additional SP (Ops) Moirangthem Rajen of Imphal east district.

The commandos reached there based on specific information that some underground elements were seen moving in the area in the last four/five days at about 1 pm.

The number of underground present there would be around six.

After killing two of them other managed to escape.

They were staying at the hut of the farm for the last few days, he added.

Reporters who were there for coverage found the two dead bodies around 20 feet apart near the farm house.

Irilbung police retrieved the dead bodies and deposited at the RIMS morgue for official procedure.

In Manipur, at least 14 persons died in militancy related fatalities incident in the first month January of current year.

Out of them 12 are militants of different outfits while one was a civilian and a security personnel.
