Imphal, June 29 2009: A public meeting held today at Singjamei Oinam Thingel has strongly condemned the alleged killing of civilians by security forces in the name of encounters every day.

The meeting was organised by the Committee on the Killing of L Satish (Tomba), Singjamei Oinam Thingel in collaboration with different civil organisations under the theme "Innocent people's killing by armed persons".

The meeting attended by leaders of different civil organisations adopted several resolutions.

One foremost resolution of the meeting was to appeal to State level civil organisations to convene of all Joint Action Committees constituted against killing innocent people without pronouncement of any reason.

It also resolved to appeal for mutual cooperation among different JACs in their movements and to launch a concerted movement.

The meeting further asked the State Government to address the prevailing situation of lawlessness and stop killing of civilians before a massive and forceful civil movement is launched.

Many speakers addressing the meeting opined no individual should not be summarily shot dead even as he/she has committed severest crimes.

They observed that rampant killings being perpetrated by security forces on daily basis is in total contradiction and complete violation of the principle and essence of democracy.

The indifferent attitude being adopted by the Government in the face of such critical situation evoked a serious question whether the elected Government is functioning under security forces, the speakers observed.

Noting that it needs sharing collective responsibility on the part of the people to solve the myriad problems besieging the State, they appealed to the people to tackle all issues collectively.
