Raj Bhavan attacked

Imphal, December 21 2008: AFTER THE Chief Minister's official bungalow, now it is the Raj Bhavan which has been attacked by a bomb.

A powerful blast rocked the fort-like Raj Bhavan which is guarded by security rings so tightly this evening.

However, Governor Gurbachan Jagat was out of station today.

The proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) of Lanheiba faction has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack at the Raj Bhavan.

Reports said that the blast failed to leave any impact in terms of property damages or casualties.

According to reports collected from the spot, the incident took place around 5:30 pm, at the southern side of the Raj Bhavan.

Bomb squad of Manipur police said, two explosives were hurled at the Raj Bhavan but only one had exploded.

The explosives were said to be that of Chinese made hand-grenade.

The police team recovered the unexploded grenade from the Raj Bhavan premises.

No media persons were allowed to enter the premises of the Raj Bhavan for taking photograph and seeing any tell-tale signs.

According to the police bomb squad, the attackers hurled the explosives from the southern side of the Raj Bhavan which would be about a distance of 40 feet away from the sentry post manned by personnel of 109 CRPF.

Top police officials including ADGP A Romen Kumar, IGP, SP Imphal West and intelligence officials arrived at the spot and conducted a spot enquiry.

However, police did not give any official version regarding the incident.

Director General of Police, Manipur, Y Joykumar is also reportedly out of station.

It is pertinent to note that today's incident at the Raj Bhavan came amidst tight security taken up by Manipur police commandos in the "high security zone" including the Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister's secretariat cum official bungalow and the Manipur Secretariat following the repeated bomb attacks at the Chief Minister's official bungalow in the recent times.
