Imphal, January 21 2009: At least 6 Assam Rifles personnel including a JCO were killed and two others injured when a gun fight ensued between AR personnel today at about 5 pm at Awang Kasom located about 15 Kms west of Chingai sub-division headquarters in Ukhrul district.

Significantly the place is not very far from Siroy where the Assam Rifles and the NSCN (IM) are locked in a stand off.

According to police source, the gun fight ensued when two AR groups on ROP duty mistook each other as some other parties out with arms.

When The Sangai Express contacted the PRO of Assam Rifles, the officer confirmed the incident as well as the number of casualties.

The PRO informed that the incident occurred when a jawan of 17 Assam Rifles opened indiscriminate firing and fled with some arms.

The rogue jawan has been identified as one TS Tangkhul.

A massive manhunt has been launched to track him down, said the PRO and added that details are being awaited.
