Imphal, December 10 2009: A suspected underground activist was reportedly shot dead by Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Kangchup Patbung under Sapermeina police station but located in between Imphal West and Senapati District.

According to police report, the encounter took place between the UG suspects and troops of 26 Assam Rifles posted at Kangchup foothill at Patbung which is not far from the security post at around 4.30 am today.

In the ensuing encounter, Assam Rifles shot dead the UG suspect and recovered one point 32 pistol from his possession.

Further search of the encounter site also led to the recovery of 20 fired cartridges of AK-47 and 7 other cartridges of AK weapon.

The body of the UG suspect, whose identity is yet to be established, has been picked up by the police and kept at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

The slain UG suspect was found clad in blue jean pant, olive green jacket, coffee colour jersey and camouflage canvass boots.

Of study build, the ear lobes of the deceased are not pierced and an amulet is tied on his waist and cross on his neck chain.

There were bullet marks on his chest and stomach.

Sapermeina police station have taken up a case in this connection.
