Imphal, November 10 2009: A division bench of Gauhati High Court has directed the District and Sessions Judge, Manipur East to conduct an enquiry into the killing of Nongmaithem Michael of Keishampat Keisham Leikai by Imphal West police commandos at Kameng Yenkaobung in Imphal West district on November 4 last year.

The Court demanded that report of the enquiry should be submitted within six months.

The Court issued the decree after hearing a petition filed by Nongmaithem Meena, wife of the deceased.

Contending that Michael was killed in a fake encounter after he was picked up by police commandos on the way to Wahengbam Leikai, the petitioner prayed for punishment of the guilty commandos as well as commensurate compensation.

In connection with the writ petition, the Court sent notices to relevant parties of the Government following which the Government filed a counter affidavit.

According to the counter-affidavit, Michael was killed in a shoot-out at Kameng Yenkaobung at about 4 pm of November 4, 2008 .

Considering the petition as well as the counter-affidavit, a division bench of Gauhati High Court comprising of Justices Maibam BK Singh and AC Upaghyay passed an order to conduct an enquiry into the incident and submit the report within six months.
