AR troops slay UG suspect

Imphal, September 26 2009: Troops of 31 Assam Rifles reportedly shot dead a suspected UG cadre during an encounter at Indo-Myanmar border area and recovered arms and ammunition from his possession.

The encounter took place on September 25 night at a spot in between Indo-Myanmar pillar nos.80 and 81 in Moreh under Chandel district.

a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles said troops of 31 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under IGAR (South) observed movements and challenged individuals approaching the ambush site.

The individuals retaliated with heavy auto and lathod fire and attempted to flee into thick foliage in the area.

In the ensuing fire fight, one UG was shot dead and recovered one US made 40 mm lathod, one lathod live round, two empty shells and one Chinese hand grenade from the site of the encounter.

The body along with the recovered items have been handed over to Moreh Police Station today, the PRO informed.

Meanwhile, police have brought and deposited the corpse of the UG suspect who is yet to be identified at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

It is said the slain UG appears to be a Meitei, around 30 years of age, with fair complexion, hair cropped short and height of about 5 feet and 4 inches.
