UG shot dead, extortionists rounded up

Imphal, February 25 2009: A combined force of Imphal East Police Commandos and 28 Assam Rifles shot dead a suspected cadre of the proscribed KCP-MC during an encounter at Thambalkhong Sabal Leikai under Porompat Police Station at around 8.10 pm today.

According to police report, the encounter broke out when the combined force rushed in to the area following specific information on the presence of UGs.

When the combined force asked three youths who were seen moving about suspiciously, instead of stopping, they opened fire at the combined force.

The combined force also retaliated the firing and killed one UG while the other two managed to escape under cover of darkness.

One 9 mm pistol and magazine loaded with three rounds of ammunition have been recovered from the posession of the slain UG apart from details of the monetary amount collected from various Government Departments.

The body has been picked up and kept at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital, the police source added.

Extortionists rounded up:Two suspected cadres of the proscribed KCP-MC group who came to extort money have been handed over to the police after being rounded by local people of Langthabal Mantrikhong last night.

At the instance of the two rounded up cadres identified as Thokchom Naobi (20) s/o Raghumani of Bashikhong and Pukhrambam Premkumar (23) of Langthabal Lep Mayai Leikai, police have also been able to arrest one more cadre.

According to police report, Naobi and Premkumar were rounded up by the people while coming to exhort money from a house at Langthabal Mantrikhong at around 7.30 pm yesterday.

Both of them were kept the whole night and were handed over to the police today morning, police report added.

Meanwhile, according to information received by the press, with the help of Premkumar, Naobi served demand notes to some selected people of Langthabal area who are engaged in different professions few days earlier.

Naobi was rounded up by the people while coming to collect the money from a house last night and following the disclosure of Naobi, Premkumar was also rounded up on the same night.

The demand notes served by Naobi was signed jointly by commander in chief of KCP-MC Ibungo Ngangom and RO finance Taibanganba and the demanded amount ranges from Rs 3 to 10 lakhs.

On the other hand, subsequent to handing over the two rounded KCP-MC cadres, Imphal East District Police Commandos have managed arrest another cadre of the proscribed outfit identified as Thokchom Boy (28) of Bashikhong from near his house at around 9 am today, the police source said.
