Imphal, May 21 2009: Reacting to the counter claim of the Meira Paibis over the incident of killing one S Amarjit s/o S Achou Singh of Chairen Makha Leikai on May 2 at Changoubung village, Superintendent of Police of Senapati District has clarified to all concerned that there is not an iota of doubt about the deceased being a highway robber/gangster.

Setting the record straight, the SP said that the incident on the said day was witnessed by occupants/passengers of buses and trucks whom the deceased and his accomplice had stopped and looted at gun-point.

The shopkeepers and the villagers of Changoubung as well as the driver of the autorickshaw in which the deceased and his accomplice, who managed to escape, forcibly occupied to escape from police, were eyewitnesses to the armed stand off and when challenged by the police to surrender he fired at the police.

In the retaliatory firing of the police, he was killed on the spot and recovered one 9 mm pistol (marked USA) with three live rounds and 3 empty cases, Rs 500 in cash and some incriminating documents including three identity cards from the possession of the deceased, the SP said.

As to the allegation that the deceased's cloth did not bore bullet holes/marks, the SP pointed out that changing of the deceased's cloth after post-mortem examination had been done by the elder brother of the deceased S Surjit Singh who received the body in the presence of the police and other relatives of the deceased at morgue.

Hence, the allegations against the police are not only baseless but highly objectionable, the SP said, adding that no social organisation or person should be mislead by such unfounded allegations.
