Grenade attacks continue, protest staged

Imphal, July 11 2009: The Wangkhei Laishram Leikai residence of PWD Assistant Engineer (Capital Project) Akham Narendradhaja (57) was attacked with a hand grenade today.

Unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade at the residence of the AE at about 12.45 pm today.

But there was no casualty because of the blast.

The grenade exploded near the garage of the AE.

Some spots made by pellets were observed on the fuel tank of a motor cycle (CBZ) kept inside the garage.

At the time of the explosion, Narendradhaja was not at home.

It is reported that some local people saw two persons walking away towards the South after lobbing the hand grenade.

Meanwhile, denouncing the grenade attack at the Soibam Leikai Wangkhei residence of Raj Polyclinic proprietor Haobijam Rajen (45) last night which caused injuries to two persons including a woman, people of the locality staged a protest demonstration at the ground of Citizens' Club today.

On the other hand, a public meeting was held at Heingang Panthoibi Lampak today against the grenade attack at the residence of one Hirom Apabi Devi (60) last night.

The meeting jointly organised by local clubs of Heingang and Meira Paibi organisations condemned the grenade attack in the strongest term.

Asking all concerned not to undertake such bomb attacks in civilian inhabited areas in future, the local people also appealed to the concerned individuals/group to own and explain the act.

The grenade explosion at the home of Apabi caused damages to the house of PWD AE (NH-II) Hirom Santakumar.
