Clearly disappointed over the failure of the university authority to ensure security inside the campus of the varsity, members of the Manipur University Teachers' Association during a general body meeting today demanded the resignation of the VC on moral ground.

Quoting family sources, president MUTA M Ranjit Singh said that the late Professor had requested security cover as well as an official vehicle following his appointment as the Proctor of the university.

The request of Md Islamuddin was however turned down by the university authority.

During the meeting, attended by about 80 teachers, MUTA also decided to demand that the case be handed over to the CBI and to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.

Copies of the resolutions adopted during today's meeting would be submitted to the Prime Minister, MU Chancellor RN Srivastava, Chief Rector Gurbachan Jagat the Governor of Manipur and Chief Minister O Ibobi, said Ranjit.

The teachers' body has also appealed to all not to repeat such acts inside the campus of the university and to respect the sanctity of a place of learning.

After the meeting the teachers proceeded to the residence of the late Professor at Yairipok Changamdabi to hold a condolence meeting.

Meanwhile about 600 boys hostelers of MU left vacated their hostel rooms today accusing the police commandos of frequently raiding their rooms and disturbing the academic atmosphere.

A research scholar said that the police commandos had thoroughly combed the hostels on the day the Professor was killed and the frequent raids have only harassed the students.

Since the VC has failed to give an assurance that the raids will not be repeated the students have no alternatives but to leave the hostel, said the student.

Significantly the second semester examination is on.

Another student from the History Department hailing from Tamenglong said that he would stay at a hotel for the day before proceeding to his village tomorrow.
