Two hurt in bomb and gun attacks, Pradhan shot at

Imphal, March 25 2009: In separate incidents of violence unleased by unidentified armed persons over the last 24 hours, the wife of an Adhyaksha of Imphal West Zilla Parishad sustained injuries in a bomb attack at their residence while the brother-in-law of the Chairperson of Imphal Municipal Council was wounded in a gun attack even as the Pradhan of Nachou Gram Panchayat was shot at and injured.

According to police report, a Chinese made hand grenade lobbed by two unidentified youths who came riding a numberless red colour Honda Activa exploded at the residence of the Adhyaksha Soibam Subhaschandra Singh (44) at Ningombam Mayai Leikai near Tulihal Airport at around 12.45 pm today.

In the bomb attack, the wife of the Adhyaksha identified as Soibam Ongbi Binodini (38) was hit by a bomb splinter on her head.

She has been admitted to the Shija Hospitals for treatment.

At the time of the attack, the Adhyaksha was not present at the house and a ceremony organised in connection with the death anniversary of one of his uncles had just finished.

Injured Binodini is an ASHA worker under the National Rural Health Mission.

The bomb which landed and exploded near a newly constructed makeshift outhouse damaged the back portion of a bicycle kept near apart from puncturing the rear tyres of a scooter and a Maruti car with bomb splinters.

One Radiator and the walls of the house also suffered damages in the explosion.

SSP of Imphal West District L Kailun inspected the site of the explosion.

Police also launched a search operation to nab the attackers in and around Ningombam area.

However, there is no report of any arrest made in this regard.

On the other hand, one of the brothers-in-law of Meinam Ranisana Devi, who is the Chairperson of Imphal Municipal Council sustained injuries when unidentified armed persons opened fire at her Uripok Achom Leikai residence at around 8 pm yesterday.

The injured brother-in-law has been identified as Advocate M Tombi Singh.

He was hit by a bullet on his left thigh.

Tombi was taken to RIMS Hospital for treatment.

However, as his condition was not so serious, he has been discharged after first aid.

In connection with the firing attack, Ranisana suspected that it may be related to the implementation of various schemes being taken up by the IMC and handing over of the task of collecting the toll tax to some private parties, so his brother-in-law has nothing to do in these matters.

With the last night's firing attack, it is the third time that the residence of the Chairperson has been targeted by unidentified armed persons.

Iprotest against the firing attack which left an innocent brother-in-law of the Chairperson injured, local residents staged a Wakat Meepham at Uripok Achom Leikai today.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen shot the Pradhan of Nachou Gram Panchayat identified as Nongmaithem Ranjit (46) on his leg yesterday morning.

According to police report, three unidentified gunmen called out the Pradhan from his Nachou Awang Leikai house at around 8.30 am and shot him on his right thigh after taking him not far from his house.
