Five AR men including Major, Captain killed in Samtal ambush

Imphal, November 23 2009: At least five Assam Rifles personnel, including a Major and a Captain were killed in an ambush laid by cadres of the proscribed UNLF today at Samtal area in Chandel district.

The UNLF, which has claimed responsibility for the lethal strike, however claimed that nine AR personnel were killed in the clinical execution of the attack, which was carried out twice.

According to police, well armed unidentified gunmen attack troops of the 43rd Bn Assam Rifles, who were travelling in a Gypsy and Mini Truck at Dingpi area in Chandel area today at about 9.15 am.

In the attack a Major of the 43rd Assam Rifles, who had come on deputation as well as a Captain along with the other jawans were killed.

The militants decamped with two AK Rifles, two INSAS Rifles and one Multi-Folding Carbine, said the police source.

The deceased personnel have been identified as Major Bhupendra Mehra, Captain Dr Amar Kumar, Havildar Parmar, Rifleman Navayan Singh and Ajoy Singh.

However no official and recorded report about the incident as well the names of the killed personnel have been submitted to the police station.

The police station is, Molcham police station in Chandel district.

A spokesman of the Assam Rifles, on being contacted said that the incident occurred when rebels attacked a two vehicle convoy bof the 43rd Bn Assam Rifles.

Confirming the death of the two officers, he said, "We are still trying to find out whether any weapons have been carted away or not".

The bodies were brought to RIMS morgue by personnel of 21 Assam Rifles late today evening.

Police source said that a gun fight ensued again at about 12 pm, when a reinforcement team rushed to the area.

Details about any casualties suffered in the second shoot out are yet to be received.

Search operations have been launched in the area by the Assam Rifles, following the incidents.

There is however no report of any arrest, till the time of filing this report.
