Imphal, October 21 2009: Ningol Chakkouba and its eve just meant a gory end for two women, with both of them suspected to have been brutally killed after being raped.

The exact date of their deaths is yet to be ascertained, but it is highly suspected that the despicable crimes were committed on Chakkouba eve and on the day itself.

In two separate incidents of suspected rape and murder, an 18-year old young married woman was found bludgeoned to death while a 35-year old maiden was found hacked to death.

The young married woman who was found bludgeoned to death has been identified as Okram Ongbi Tamphasana Devi (18) w/o Okram Chinglensana of Serou Part-I Awang Leikai.

Her body was recovered from near a canal at Langthrei Loukon along the side of Imphal Yairipok Road under Irilbung Police Station by the local people yesterday morning.

Her clothes were in tatters with the inner wear hanging on the left foot when the body was found raising suspicion of rape before being done to death.

There were also injury marks, probably made by repeated hitting with some heavy objects like rocks and boulders on her body.

One 30-year old Pukhrambam Momba alias Bobby s/o P Samu of Keirao Mayai Leikai, who married the younger sister of Chinglensana and is a suspect is reportedly absconding.

It may be recalled here that the accused Momba is the same person who had been punished with a bullet shot on one of his legs by a UG group some years back in connection with the killing of a child at Mahabali Jungle here in Imphal.

In accordance with the statement given by Okram Ongbi Indrani, mother-in-law of Tamphasana, to the police, her son Chinglensana is currently lodged in jail after being arrested by the Assam Rifles on alleged charge of having nexus with a UG group a few months back and for the last few days efforts were being made to bail out Chinglensana.

As his wife's presence was said to be essential for securing the release of Chinglensana, three of them, namely her daughter-in-law Tamphasana, herself (Indrani) and the accused Momba together left Serou in the morning of October 19 and came to Imphal.

After arriving at Imphal at around 10.30 am, they went to an office at Porompat.

Later, to get some documents required for securing the release of Chinglensana, Tamphasana went along with Momba while leaving her behind at the office.

However, as both of them did not return, she finally came to the quarters of Minister K Ranjit and halted the night there.

Thinking that Tamphasana may have spent the previous night at Momba's place, she left the Minister's quarters yesterday morning and went to Momba's place.

On the way, she heard people talking about the body of a woman lying on the roadside.

On hearing the descriptions of the clothes worn by the woman, she had an uneasy feeling whether it would be her daughter-in-law.

Nevertheless, she hurried to the place of Momba and she learnt from the parents of Momba that Tamphasana had not spend the night there.

With her suspicion rising, she immediately left for the spot where the body of the woman was lying and confirmed that it was indeed her daughter in law.

It is said that on the same night of the incident, Momba left home taking along with him his wife and children.

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident.

In the other incident, a body of a 35-year old maiden was found hacked to death near Loukhong Dam at Pukhao Khabam under Lamlai Police Station early morning today.

The victim has been identified as Sapam Memton (35) d/o late Sapam Jugin of Pukhao Khabam.

The body was detected by some farmers who were on their way to the paddy field.

There were fatal hacking injury marks made by a heavy knife at the back of her head.

The spot where her body was found lying inside an irrigational canal is located around half a kilometre to the east of her residence.

Her inner-wear was found lying on the dam while the Phanek is still missing.

According to family members, last night at around 7 to 8 pm, Memton had used the mobile phone of one her neighbouring friends and made a call to an unknown number.

After having the talk, she requested one of the kids in the family of her friend to delete the number she had called before leaving.

However, just after she left and before the number could be deleted, a call was received from the same number.

As the caller came to know that the receiver was not Memton, the call had been disconnected.

As there was a charity film show at the local ground last night, the family members were under the impression that Memton have probably gone to watch the film and did not care to find out about her whereabouts.

It was only in the morning today when people started talking about a body lying that the family members went and confirmed that it was that of Memton.

Lamlai police have taken up a case and the body deposited at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.
