Imphal, February 18, 2010: Troops of the Assam Rifles claimed to have gunned down five suspected underground cadres during a shoot-out that took place last night close to the Indo-Myanmar border in Ukhrul district.

The shoot-out involving troops of 12 Assam Rifles and unidentified persons is informed to have occurred at near Kashung village, which is under Kasom Khullen police station of Ukhrul district.

A PRO IGAR (S) release said, troops of 12 AR, discovering movement of unidentified armed persons along Taret river launched operation in that area.

At around 10.50 pm of February 17 the AR troops observed suspicious movement of 10-12 armed persons, who on being challenged opened heavy volume of indiscriminate fire at the security personnel.

As the AR troops retaliated a gunfight ensued for about half an hour during which some of the unidentified armed persons tried to escape towards Taret river taking advantage of the dense undergrowth, the PRO maintained.

Later, search of the encounter site led to the discovery of five bodies apart from recovering two AK 47 rifles with three magazines, seven AK 47 rounds, one 9 mm (M-20) pistol with magazine, one 7 mm pistol with magazine and two live rounds, one 9 mm pistol with two live rounds, two Chinese hand grenades, six fired cartridge of AK 47 and three fire case of 9 mm pistol from the possession of the deceased persons, it added.

Informing that full operation is still in progress, the release informed that the victims' bodies and seized items have been handed over to Kasom Khullen police station today.

Providing more details, a police source said a team of Ukhrul district police has proceeded for Kasom Khullen via Imphal to collect the five corpses.

In another development, Imphal West district police commandos have apprehended three PLA cadres from whom bombs and large quantity of ammunition have also been recovered.

The recovered items include 2100 rounds of AK series rifle, 500 M-16 rifle rounds, 70 lathode bombs, 10 Chinese hand-grenades with detonators, 13 Chinese-made 2 inch mortar shells, two AK series magazines, a mobile phone hand-set and one Honda Activa scooter (MN-01R/0893).Displaying the recovered items to newspersons at Commando complex this evening, additional SP of Imphal west district police Dr AK Jhaljit said the seizures were made based on the disclosure by an RPF/PLA activist.

Stating that based on information about an over ground PLA activist supposed to carry out extortion activities at Imphal areas teams of police commandos were deployed at strategic locations of the twin capital district for frisking and checking duty yesterday.

At about 5.30 pm, one Sarungbam Bimol Singh (30) s/o S Kesho of yairipok Yambem Makha Leikai was apprehended from near GM Hall, said the police officer who also quoted the arrestee of identifying himself of being an overground worker of the PLA.

Bimol reportedly worked for the armed outfit since November 2007 under the command of the PLA's self styled Lieutenant Krishna.

Dr Jhaljit further informed of Bimol revealing that large quantity of ammunition of bombs were hidden at the Yairipok Yambem Makha Leikai residences of Soubam Pungou Singh (50) s/o (L) Modhu and Moirangthem Ibomcha Singh (38) s/o (L) Tomba.

During subsequent raids conducted at the said houses late last night based on Bimol's disclosures the cache of ammunition and bombs were recovered, he maintained adding that the mobile phone and the scooter were recovered from Bimol's possession.

The ASP also said that the arrest trio along with the seized items would be handed over to City Police station.
