Imphal, July 11 2009: In follow-up action to detection of under-trial prisoners of Sajiwa Central Jail indulging in extortion and criminal activities, two Additional SPs have been transferred while two Head Warders, one Jailor and one Warder have been suspended.

Moreover, all staff of Sajiwa Jail have been removed and replaced by commandos, MR and VDF.

According to information received from Jail authority, transfer and suspension of jail staff was for improving jail administration and enhancing security in the jail.

Further actions would be initiated after receiving report of the ongoing police investigation, sources said.

After Chief Minister O Ibobi has declared on the floor of the House on July 9 to replace the existing jail staff with police in order to streamline jail administration, Department of Personnel issued transfer orders of Imphal Central Jail's Additional SP Subash and Sajiwa Central Jail's Additional SP Phanithang, which reposted them at Churachandpur and Chandel sub-jails respectively.

As per the order, Assistant Commandant of 5th MR Jaheruddin and 6th MR Assistant Commandant Balaram would be taking charge of Additional SP Sajiwa Jail and Additional SP Imphal Jail respectively.

All the 63 staff of Sajiwa Jail have been reposted at Imphal Central Jail and other units.

They have been replaced by 100 VDF personnel, 25 commandos and some MR personnel.

More particularly, commandos and VDF personnel would be looking after the security of Sajiwa Jail.

Together with these measures taken up by the Govt to revamp jail administration, two Head Warders, one Jailor and one Warder have been suspended.

Further, the State Government has initiated necessary procedure to declare Sajiwa Jail as a high security central jail.

Moreover, preparatory works have been completed to install a mobile jammer so that inmates of the jail could not maintain mobile connection with outside world.
