Assassination of Prof Islamuddin; PM concerned, assures positive action

Imphal, June 11 2009: Expressing deep concern over the assassination of Professor Md Islamuddin on the campus of Manipur University on May 25, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured a team of State Muslim girls to look into the matter so as to bring justice besides giving more impetus to the development of the varsity, which is a Central University.

During the interaction with the representatives of Muslim girls from Manipur, the Prime Minister also hinted that a meeting with his Council of Ministers may be held on June 25 to discuss the plight of the students following the high profile assassination of the Professor who was also the Proctor of the university.

Speaking to The Sangai Express M Ruksher Choudhury, president of the All Manipur Muslim Girls' Students' Union said that the Union MoS for Rural Development Agatha Sangma may also be consulted by the Prime Minister on the matter.

Ms Choudhury said that they met the Prime Minister on June 7 and highlighted the grim situation in Manipur University following the day light murder of the Professor inside the varsity campus.

The student leader said that besides urging the Prime Minister to do the needful to bring justice, the team also urged him to take up specific measures to ensure the all round development of the university as well as the education system in the State, particularly for the minority Muslims.

The Prime Minister was also urged to induct a qualified person from the Muslim community in place of the slain Professor as well as to set up a separate guest house for the minority Muslims in the university.

After lending a sympathetic and patient hearing, the Prime Minister assured that he would look into the matter, said Ruksher.

The Prime Minister also assured that he would get in touch with the State Government and advise speedy investigation of the case, said the student leader.

Ruksher along with three other student leaders returned to Imphal yesterday.

Manipur University has been in a state of unrest after the killing of the Professor with five students booked under the NSA allegedly in connection with the case while an IRB personnel has also surrendered to the police and has been detained under the NSA on similar charge.
