Student body/NGO offices face expulsion

Imphal, June 01 2009: Even as a large number of students have taken a strong stance against the detention of 13 student leaders following the assassination of Prof Md Islamuddin, the State Cabinet has decided to take up necessary measures to close down offices of all student bodies and NGOs currently housed at Government schools/colleges and institutions.

A decision to this effect was adopted during an emergency Cabinet meeting of the SPF Government held today, informed a senior Minister of the Government.

The meeting presided by Chief Minister O Ibobi deliberated on student bodies and NGOs running their offices from Government institutions.

After a minute discussion, the Cabinet meeting agreed to serve notices to all concerned to shift the offices of student unions and NGOs from Government institutions within 15 days.

The meeting also studied the prevailing law and order situation, added the Minister.

Meanwhile students continued to stage protest demonstration decrying the arrest and detention of student leaders in connection with the killing of Proctor of Manipur University Prof Md Islamuddin and demanding their unconditional release.

Students of Sacred Heart School at Porompat and International Modernised Academy at Purana Rajbari demonstrated in their respective school gates to press the demand for unconditional release of the arrested student leaders.

Students of Herbert School at Ghari, HRD School, also at Ghari and DSC Academy at Irengbam also staged similar protest demonstration in their respective school gates.

At Nambol Bazar and Oinam Bazar, local Meira Paibis launched a Wakat Meepham.

During the protest demonstration, the Meira Paibis used placards with slogans decrying arrest of student leaders in connection with killing of Prof Islamuddin and demanding their unconditional release.

They also urged for ensuring education as a free zone.

Meanwhile, condemning the killing of Prof Islamuddin, secretary general of AMSU District Committee Jiribam N Kiran Kumar Singh and secretary general of DESAM Jiribam Local Council Th Rosun Meitei have decried the action of the police in taking into custody some student leaders in connection with the incident.
