Tamei yearns for Govt intervention

Imphal, May 28 2016 : People of Tamei, after suffering for a prolonged period due to inadequate infrastructure and negligence by Government authorities, are yearning for State Govt's intervention in different sectors.

Tamei, a sub-division of Tamenglong district located 114 kms from the State capital along the IT Road is an integral part of the district and it has over 50 villages mostly inhabited by the Liangmei eth-Inic community and other ;Zeliangrong tribes.

In a visit conducted by the All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) as part of the rural reporting initiative taken up by the union to highlight the hardships faced at different areas of the State, the visiting team led by its president, general secretary and other key executive members came across the area being left neglected by the State Govt and its agencies.

Langmiei Govt High School located at Langmei, Tamei was established in 1922 could be among the oldest schools of the State but its existing condition was pathetic with limited number of teachers and inadequate physical infrastructure like toilet facilities, power supply etc.

Even though the school made steady progress in the past and has served as a premier educational institutions for students from over 50 villages of the subdivision, till today the department concerned has failed to provide the required number of teachers and other supporting staff as per Right to Education norms.

Langmiei Govt High School, which has about 457 students from classes IV to X has only nine teachers including three arts teacher, two science and four primary teachers.

There is no teacher for mathematics, language, computer science besides the absence of other clerical staff.

Principal in-charge Guangngamdai said out of 63 students who appeared in this year's HSLC exam 39 cleared the exam from Tamei Private Centre with the school securing a record 73 of pass percentage.

Citing serious handicap due to lack of sufficient number of staff and teachers, Guangngamdai said, "We are making internal adjustment with the existing teachers so as to cover all subjects in the larger interest of students" .

"Even though I am a science teacher, as t ere is no language teacher,) am teaching Manipuri language in Roman letter," he; added.

Due to such unfavourable conditions and lack of language teachers in the interior parts of the State, language barrier and communication gap arises which could have a far reaching impact, Guangngamdai said.

Mention may be made that the school has been upgraded into higher secondary school in April last year after State Cabinet on December 22, 2014 gave approval for the same.

Before the order for the upgradation, the costruction works of school building was completed in 2009- 10.But to the dismay of the public, the up-gradation process has not yet initiated as of today.

The newly constructed building of the Higher Secondary School is now in a battered condition even before its inauguration.

With worsening conditions in various sectors of the area, villagers after joining hands with student organizations and village authorities of the Sub-division have formed the Joint Action Committee for Tamei Area Development (JAC-TAD) to press their demands and address their grievances to the State Govt and its implementing agencies.

Convener of the JAC NK Job expressed that following the lack of infrastructural development of the well functioning Govt High school of the area, and failure of the concerned authorities to upgrade the school to the status of Govt Higher Secondary School after all its infrastructure are well established, a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister appraising their grievances and demands.

Further he said that with no higher secondary schools in the Tamei sub-division, parents are forced to send their children to other places for higher studies.

With no proper financial support many students end up living in poorly maintained rented houses without any guardians.

Such students finally end up as dropouts or lose their moral and it has affected the student communities at large, he added.

He warned that the JAC-TAD will launch democratic means of public agitation if the concerned authorities failed to implement the upgradation process of the high school to higher secondary level within the academic year, 2016-17 .
