Strongly condemning the reported summoning of Editors by agencies like National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the publication of reports about the ambush laid by joint fighting force of CorCom on May 22 in Chandel district wherein six AR jawan including a JCO were killed, the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union has highlighted the matter to the Indian Journalists ' Union (IJU) for taking necessary action.
AMWJU convened a meeting this evening in connection with the reported infringement upon press freedom by agencies like NIA, which summoned Editors and asked them to disclose their sources, said a statement issued by AMWJU.
The union highlighted the matter to IJU president SN Sinha for taking necessary action.
At the same time, the IJU president, while acknowledging the matter as an unequivocal violation of press freedom, has assured that the national union would take up the case.
He also assured to submit a report in this regard to the Press Council oflndia for taking necessary action to ensure that press freedom is respected and to prevent such activity of the NIA in future.
IJU has three of its members working presently in the Press Council of India.
It may also be mentioned that an editor of a daily paper of the State was summoned by NIA earlier for publishing photograph and statement of a militant group.
With the intervention of the AMWJU and IJU, the PCI had asked the NIA not to intervene on matter that amounts to infringement of press freedom, the AMWJU statement added.
