Ukhrul, August 27 2014:
Right activists have initiated a laudable move to impart "peace education" with special focus on conflict management among the youths of Ukhrul — the Tangkhuls dominated hill district which, they felt, has seen rising violent activities.
The initiative, which comes from Ukhrul based Human Rights activists, was endorsed by 67 members representing different Tangkhul civil societies.
On Wednesday, the proposal was submitted to the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL), Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long (TNWL) and Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL) .
"A positive response from various quarters of the society is expected," said activist Hungyohong, while expressing hope that the move can "build peace with fellow men and with God..." .
With the initiative for peace education, the rights workers' proposal also includes environmental concerns.
The group aims to maul efforts in replenishing forest and biodiversity as community flagship programme.
"…we have to prove ourselves as responsible people and community at an un-negotiable juncture when danger of climate change and global warming are (sic) looming large over the planet," he stated.
The combo proposal from local rights activists have contextual relevance with the district witnessing number of land disputes among neighbouring villages in the past few years.
Police stations in Ukhrul, except for Kasom Khullen and Phungyar, recorded a land dispute cases.
The group urges the concerned organisations to take up a preliminary meeting to deliberate on ways to make the programme see the light of the day, while outlining that there should be common desire for instilling "culture of peace and cooperation among the community.
