DESAM for rationalisation of teachers' posting
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, June 24 2021: Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded the state government to take up early initiatives to rationalise posting of teachers, appoint regular principals and also transfer incompetent officers, who are delaying the process even after the government advised them in this regard.

Addressing a press meet at its office premises here on Thursday, DESAM president N Edison said that there are reports of colleges under the department of higher education planning to start admission in various courses from August as the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM) would be completing all processes for promotion of class 12 students by the end of July.

There are over 40 colleges in the state but only 15 have regular principals, he pointed out, while demanding the government to recruit or appoint regular principals at the earliest.

In the state, some colleges draw huge number of students while some do not.

Upon studying, it was found that lack of proper infrastructure and support staff are the major deterrents in attracting students.

As per the AISHE 2019 report, Lilong Haoreibi College has two teachers of Physics honours against the requirement of five teachers, and six students & four teachers in Mathematics.

On the other hand, Biramangol College has 234 students and three teachers in Economics department, 661 students with only four teachers in Education department, 553 students with six teachers in Geography, and 746 students with three teachers in political science.

Standard College has 768 students with only two teachers in education department, he said.

Such poor policies on the part of the government have been a major challenge to the goal and vision set by the National Education Policy 2020 .

These conditions will not make the colleges self-sustainable as envisaged in the NEP, he said and demanded the government to maintain proportionate student-teacher ratio in all colleges.

This will need rationalisation of posting for teachers, he opined while drawing attention of the chief minister, education minister and education commissioner for taking up necessary steps before the next academic session begins.

He further said that teachers in some colleges have been carrying out online classes on batches due to huge number of students while teachers in some colleges are doing nothing as if they do not have any students.

Since it is difficult to chalk out a date for resuming conventional classes due to the pandemic, he urged the government to make regular online classes mandatory for all students and teachers and to provide technical training to the teachers.
