State scribes awarded on National Press Day

Eight journalists including Laishram Shamungou of The Sangai Express were today conferred the Manipur State Journalist Award 2012 on the occasion of National Press Day 2013 .
The National Press Day observed at Manipur Press Club under the aegis of Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) was graced by IPR Commissioner Letkhogin Haokip, AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai and IPR Director W Rajen as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Laishram Shamungou of The Sangai Express was conferred the Manipur State Journalist Award for science and technology.
Hueiyen Lanpao (English edition) Editor Satyajit Usham was conferred the Best Editor Award for his editorials on national integration and communal harmony.
ISTV's desk editor Richard Ranjan was conferred the Manipur State Journalist Award for his news reports on crime against women.

The award carries a citation, a shawl and cash in- centive of Rs 25,000 .
Former Editor of Chura-chandpur based Mizo daily Sikmi-Eng Lalhringliana To-rell was given one time pen- sion of Rs 10,000 during the function.
Torell is now more than 80 year old and had retired from the profession of journalism.
In his address, IPR Director W Rajen said that the Press Council of India was established on November 16, 1966 .
Taking this date, the National Press Day is observed on November 16 every year.
The National Press Day is an opportune moment to analyse freedom of press and responsibility it demands.
Noting that journalists often find themselves at the re- ceiving end because of the conflict situation prevailing in Manipur for the last many years, Rajen said that paid journalism is a recent phenomenon in the history of journalism in India.
He called upon the journalist fraternity of the State to ponder on how to stay away from the new phenomenon of paid journalism.
A workshop on "Role of Media in Serving Public Interest" was also held on the occasion with former Editor of Hueiyen Lanpao Salam Bharat Bhusan as moderator.
Manipur University senior PRO M Saratchandra and AIR Imphal News Editor A Ibomcha presented different papers on the topic.
