Employees' Association of YAS bids farewell to retiree coaches

Imphal, December 13 2024: Employees' Association, Youth Affairs and Sports today accorded a farewell party to four retiree coaches of Department of Youth Affairs and Sports today in honour of their decades long services.

T Phulen, Director, Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Manipur; L Meghabama, president Coaches Association, Youth Affairs and Sports; K Shantikumar, Deputy Director Administration, Youth Affairs and Sports and L Anita Chanu, Assistant Director (Sports), Youth Affairs and Sports as presidium members among other officials.

The coaches who received a formal farewell today include Ayekpam Ibetombi (PET in 1988, promoted to coach in 1996 before retiring last year), Soibam Somchandra Singh (PET in 1988; promoted to coach in 1994 before retiring last year).

Two coaches - Tejkumar (basketball coach), and Y Kiranbala (swimming coach) however could not make it to the event.

Speaking at the occasion, T Phulen noted the role and responsibility shouldered by coaches of different disciplines in the State.

Thanks to learned and gifted coaches, the State is able to continuously produce world class athletes.

The coaches of YAS also have significant contributions towards making the State known as a sports powerhouse, he said while highlighting State's performances in the National competitions including 68th National School Games.

Phulen also spoke about the vacancies for the position of coach in the Department and maintained that the Department has received Cabinet nod to conduct recruitment to fill the vacancies.

He said that 50 percent of the position will be filled via promotion while the rest will be filled through direct recruitment.

On claims of lack of Government assistance by some sports associations on social media platforms, the YAS Director said that it is unfortunate to see such associations who are neither recognised by the Department nor able to adhere to standard guidelines making the claims that could tarnish the image of the Department.

He also took note of the growth in performance of some Khelo India Centres with addition of coaches recruited by the Youth Affairs and Sports Department with the approval of the Ministry concerned.

Declaring that a plan for construction of an indore stadium in Imphal is afoot, he said that inconveniences caused due to congestion and clash of schedules for indoor events in existing indoor facilities will be greatly reduced once the construction is completed.

He also extended best wishes to the retiring coaches and led in presenting parting gifts.
