IW top finishers in fencing, karate; IE dominate swimming

Imphal, August 29 2022: Imphal West emerged as the top finishers in fencing and karate competitions while Imphal East wrapped up their swimming campaign with the most gold and most medals on the fourth day of the 2nd Manipur Olympic Games on Monday.

FENCING: Imphal West finished atop (by gold medal count) the medal tally in fencing with six gold, five silver and four bronze medals, while Imphal East secured the second place with five gold, six silver and six bronze medals.

Kakching completed the top three with one gold and one bronze medals.

KARATE: It was double delight for Imphal West as they also produced their peerless form in the karate event by becoming the team cham pions.

They won four gold, two silver and three bronze medals over the course of the competition to get their hands on the championship title.

Thongam Suraj Singh (men's -60kg kumite), Laishram Yaiphaba Singh (men's -67kg kumite), L Premjit Singh (men's -75kg kumite) and Yumnam Stalin Singh (men's -84 & +84kg kumite) were the gold medallists.

Laishram Yaiphaba (men's kata) and Ch Lanchenba (-55kg kumite) each bagged silver medal while N Blshwodiya Devi (women's -50kg kumite), Leimapokpam Bikash (men's -50kg kumite) and Herojit Thounaojam (men's -84 & +84kg kumite) took a bronze medal each for the West.

Imphal East were second in the karate event with three gold, three silver and five bronze medals as Kakching won two gold and one bronze for third place.

SWIMMING: Imphal East set a record for the most gold medals and the most medals in total.

The East swimmers collected 19 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze medals to top the medal tally.

Imphal West were a distant second in gold count (11) plus 16 silver and six bronze medals as Kaching bagged the third spot with one silver and six bronze medals.

TENNIS: Imphal West also impressed in tennis by winning women's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles titles on Monday.

Ch Bunty had little trouble beating fellow Y Thoibi 6-2, 6-0 to take home the women's singles crown while the West pair of Th Ribhaskar and W Padameshwas registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over the East pair of Ksh Akendrajit and Soram to seal the men's doubles title.

On the other hand, Th Ribhaskar and Ch Bunty combined to defeat Ak Korunganba and L Nandini Devi in an all-Imphal West mixed doubles final.

BOXING: 12 gold medal bouts were decided in the men's youth & elite event as Tom-pok Thokchom Singh (Tbl), Soibam Yaiphaba Singh (Bpr), Kingson Pukhrambam (IW), Laishram Edison Singh (IW), Khumanthem Nongdamkhomba (IW), Chinglemba Moirangthem (IE), Chingakham Kirankumar Singh (IE), Laiphrakpam Chandrabose (IE), Leimapokpam Rahul Singh (Kak), Oinam Mangalthoi Singh (IW), Oinam Maikel Singh (Bpr) and Dusarat Kshetrimayum (IW) all triumphed in their respective gold-medal matches.

EQUESTRIAN: Thoubal won both men's tent pegging team event and men's individual tent pegging event on the fourth day of the Games.

The Thoubal quartet of M Abhiyan Singh, L Rabikanta Singh, I Rahul and Md Wajihuddin Khan claimed the gold medal in the team pegging contest as L Joykumar Singh galloped to the top podium in the men's individual pegging event.

HOCKEY: Imphal East made light work of Imphal West in their semifinal match on Monday.

The East side strolled to a 9-1 victory en route to the final.

M Dhananjoy (2', 51') and N Jabson (44', 53') scored a double each while A Deveshor (15'), G Dingku (25'), Sh Suraj (33'), N Bakhir (46') and Th Kingson (52') contributed one goal apiece in their win.

The West side scored their consolation goal through S Sanson (14') .
