Security forces seize drugs worth over ₹52.3 cr

Imphal, August 29 2022: Following the amendment of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act which allowed Manipur Rifles/India Reserve Battalion (MR/IRB) to be part of the War on Drugs 2.0 campaign of the government of Manipur, a team of 2 MR arrested a man and seized drugs worth Rs 51 crore.

The arrested man has been identified as Bishnu Banik (32) s/o (L) Deepak Banik of Muslim Nagar Moreh Ward No 5 .

According to a police report, on receiving reliable input about the presence of some drug peddlers at Sanju Bakery, Yaiskul Janmasthan in the wee hours of Monday, a combined team of MR and Youth Athletic Development Association (YADA) arrived at the bakery around 2.30 am.

The team spotted Bishnu Banik acting suspiciously inside the bakery.

Accordingly, he was detained for question ing.

A search of the bakery was then carried out and two packets containing crystal methamphetamine tablets, also known as ice drug, were recovered.

He was further questioned and another three packets containing the drugs were recovered at around 4.30 am.

Bishnu also revealed that the drugs were given to him by his partner, named Karim from Imphal East and the consignment was meant to be sent to one Lala residing outside Manipur.

The drugs weighed 5 kg in total and are estimated to be worth around Rs 50 crore in the international market.

Both the arrested person and drugs have been handed over to Imphal PS for further legal action.

Meanwhile, a combined team of 2nd MR, Kakching police commando, 5th AR and Moreh police station seized 20,000 WY tablets worth Rs 1.3 crore from Moreh Ward no 8 Ngamkhai Veng on Monday.

According to police report, the combined team searched some places in Moreh town based on reliable information and seized the tablets from a house at Ngamkhai Veng.

As the owner of the house fled from the spot, the identity is not known.

In addition to the WY tablets, the combined team also recovered 10,50,000 Kyats (Myanmar currency) and Rs 77,500 from the house.

The seized items after display before the public have been handed over to Moreh police station.

In another drug haul case, a joint team of Thoubal police commando and 16 AR led by DSP (CDO) Thoubal arrested a drug dealer identified as Md Wahidur Rahaman (18) son of Md Kabir of Moreh Ward no 5 from Lilong Bazar near petrol pump on Sunday around 5 pm.

In the follow up action, the team also arrested Md Syed Adeep Hussain (26) son of Md Syed Jalaluddin of Lilong Turel Ahanbi Mathak along with 380 grams of brown sugar from Lilong Aliya Lamkhai.

The arrested people along with the seized items have been handed over to Lilong- PS for further action, a police report said.
