Imphal, February 20 2013:
Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has lauded the State Government's decision to set up a Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation.
In a press conference held at its office today, MEELAL president Sadokpam Tomba said that promotion and development of Manipuri language would not be possible without the initiative of the Government although MEELAL has been putting in serious effort in this regard.
Expressing hope that the new Directorate would help in the development of Manipuri language, S Tomba especially thanked Chief Minister O Ibobi and Education Minister M Okendro for initiating the matter.
Informing that MEELAL would organise a training programme for TET candidates of Meetei Mayek soon, S Tomba said that Education Minister would launch the programme.
The State currently has more than 10 different dialects recognised by the Government, S Tomba urged the concerned to help the students of Catholic schools in opting MIL instead of Alternative English.
Saying that MEELAL would conduct an inspection tour in all the Catholic schools of the State to check whether the students opt for MIL, S Tomba said that action would be taken against those schools which do not teach MIL to its students.
Taking part at the press conference, Language Cell Joint Director Dr L Mahabir said that separate Language Directorates were there in other States since long time back.
Claiming that the proposed Language Directorate of the State would be more systematic than the Directorates of other States, he said that Manipuri would be the link language in the Directorate.
