Headmaster lynched to death

One Headmaster of a Government school was lynched on the charge of cattle theft.
Incensed by the killing, a large number of people from Keirao Makting tried to storm Irilbung police station in addition to setting ablaze house of one of the accused.
The Headmaster was lynched to death at Kongba Makha Nandeibam Leikai, Imphal East district under Irilbung police station in the wee hours today.
According to information culled from the spot, one Khumallambam Brojen was awakened by persistent barking of dogs at around 2.30 am.
As he went out to check what was the matter, Brojen found that his calf was missing.
Brojen and his wife Ibe (47) were rearing a cow and a calf and they have a cowshed in the rear portion of their homestead.
On searching the surrounding areas, the calf and an unidentified man were found on a marshy spot a little distance away from the cowshed.
Immediately, people of the neighbourhood were informed and the man was rounded up.
The apprehended man was led away towards a bridge located nearby where he was subjected to severe thrashing and ultimately lynched to death.
The deceased has been identified as one Md Hasmat Ali alias Babu (55) of Keirao Makting Awang Leikai.
He was the Headmaster of Keirao Makting UJB School.
Police have picked up the body of Hasmat apart from seizing a piece of rope which was tied around the calf's neck and by which Hasmat was allegedly pulling the calf.
While the corpse has been deposited in JNIMS morgue, the calf has been taken to Irilbung P/S.On the other hand, a public meeting held at Keirao Makting Youth Club ground constituted the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Md Hasmat Ali alias Babu.
JAC convenor Md Rajauddin while maintaining that Hasmat Ali was a soft-spoken and upright teacher, dismissed the allegation that he was attempting to steal a calf.
Police should pull up the owner of the calf and carry out a thorough investigation.
All those involved in the killing directly and indirectly should be awarded befitting punishment.
If any one from Keirao was found involved in the killing of Hasmat Ali, he would be banished from the locality and his properties would be forfeited, said the JA C convenor.
Adequate compensation and a suitable Government job should be given to the family of the deceased.
Until and unless all these demands are translated into action, the corpse would not be claimed.
After the meeting, people gathered for the meeting made an abortive attempt to storm Irilbung P/S.They also blocked Imphal-Yairipok road.
In the meantime, house of one Md Matlif who is a neighbour of Hasmat was set ablaze by an infuriated mob this afternoon.
