Preservation of cultural heritage through handloom stressed

Underlining the important role of handloom trade, Kangpokpi AC MLA Nemcha Kipgen implored women of the State to preserve their cultural heritage through handloom.
The MLA was speaking at the inaugural function of group work shed for Kangpokpi area handloom cluster and 2 months weaving training program under Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) held at Vengthah, Kangpokpi ward No 3 today.
MLA Nemcha Kipgen said handloom fabrics are an essential part of India's heritage which not only shows the richness and diversity of the country but the artistry of the weavers.
She said handloom has the potential to provide livelihood opportunity to women in particular and it would empower them in the true sense and enable them in getting a decent earning.

"If we want to keep the heritage of our Nation alive, then it is important to improve the socio-economic status of weavers by updating their skills and providing them with essential inputs", asserted the MLA.
The inaugural function was attended by Nemcha Kipgen, MLA Kangpokpi AC; N Nilabantajit, Project Manager (H/L), Senapati district; K Reshma Devi, CDE, Kangpokpi Area Handloom Cluster; L Gopendro Singh, Designer cum Marketing Executive, Kangpokpi Area Handloom Cluster and S Bhubol, Entrepreneur, Shintha Handloom and Handicraft, Manipur as chief guest, guest of honour, president and special invitees respectively.
Constructed under North Eastern Region Textile Promotion Scheme, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India and implemented by District Handloom and Textile Office, Senapati district, Manipur, the Group Work Shed for Kangpokpi area Handloom Cluster is the first ever Group Work Shed established in the entire hill district of Manipur and North East.
The two months weaving training program will be held under the aegis of the District Handloom and Textile Office, Senapati under Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) .
Pastor J Lunkim, chairman, Kangpokpi Town Churches Fellowships; Seikhomang Khongsai, president, Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, Chonkam Kipgen, chairman, Kangpokpi Town Committee; KWWO members and KYU members also took part in the event apart from various weavers from different parts of Kangpokpi.
