Security beefed up, AR on alert at border areas of Ukhrul

Ukhrul, October 18 2015: More security personnel have been deployed after the District Magistrate of Ukhrul clamped prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 at all the border areas of the district within a 3 km radius for a period of 6 months.

The prohibitory orders were clamped on October 12 .

Sources said that the prohibitory orders were clamped after getting information that militants were infiltrating from across Myanmar as well as to check other illegal activities along the border.

After the prohibitory orders were clamped, troops of 41 Assam Rifles and 44 Assam Rifles have been put on alert to guard the border area of Ukhrul district, and Temporary Operating Base (TOB) and Company Operating Base (COB) have been put up in and around the village as well as at strategic points.

TOB camp has been set up at Tusom village, Ukhrul, while such other camps have also been established at undisclosed areas.

Operation is also likely to be intensified in the coming days.

It is expected that more surprise checkings will be conducted along the Indo-Myanmar border to prevent trafficking of arms and ammunition and smuggling activities.

Talking to The Sangai Express some border villagers said that the AR personnel have been on high alert and the villagers have stopped moving out at night.

Some said that chopper could also be seen flying over the border areas on clear, cloudless days.

Security forces have been on alert after the Paraolon ambush in Chandel district on June 4 in which 18 soldiers of Dogra Regiment were killed.

The ambush was carried out by a combined team of militants including the NSCN (K).

Chandel shares border with Ukhrul and thus security forces have not ruled out a similar attack along the Indo-Myanmar border at Ukhrul.

According to unconfirmed report, former army chief of the NSCN (IM) Hansi is also sheltering somewhere at the border region of the district.

In a brief interaction with this correspondent, Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Modak Hrisheekesh said that the prohibitory order has been clamped to ensure the safety of the villagers.

The main purpose of clamping CrPC 144 is to check movement of militants and other illegal activities at the Indo-Myanmar border.

He further said that villagers can perform their daily normal activities of farming or other duties, but they have to abide by the restrictions imposed under CrPC 144 from 6 pm to 4 am everyday.

In case of emergency entailing movement within the said 3 km radius, prior permission should be sought from the commandant concerned.
