Imphal, January 16 2015 : Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union (IGNTUSU) has launched their stir pressing various demands to the Government from today.

Speaking to reporters at their Chingmeirong campus, IGNTUSU president K Bowang Kho said that date to inaugurate the varsity's main campus at Makhan village in Senapati district was deferred after it was fixed in November last year.

He said that the approach road of the campus from NH-2 is in a dilapidated state.

The president said that they would intensify their agitation if the Government fails to construct this road and lay water supply pipeline for the campus within this month.

Announcing that their stir has commenced from today, K Bowang Kho said that varsity's office would be picketed from tomorrow.

During a meeting held in July last year in the Chief Minister's office chamber, the Chief Minister, Education Minister, Chief Secretary and other top officials assured the representatives of the student's body to construct the road and provide necessary infrastructure at the earliest, he added.

The president further said that the Chief Secretary along with Central and State Government OSDs and student union representatives visited the main campus in Makhan village in August 2014 as well.

However, the Government's assurance has not been translated into action till date, he added.

K Bowang Kho added that although it was earlier planned to inaugurate the campus during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the State in November last year, the State Government had to defer the inauguration date as varsity's infrastructures were not ready for inauguration at that time.

Although, the regional campus now has a full-time Registrar, the post of Director is still vacant, he added.

He said that interviews for the appointment of full-time Director and Registrar were held in September 2014 .

Saying that the pace of construction works is too slow, he said that the Government constructed only one Block per year in the past six years.

Maintaining that the campus is facing the problem of lack of teaching and non-teaching staff, K Bowang Kho questioned why fresh recruitments are not held till date.

Stating that the fee structure of the regional campus is too high unlike other Central Universities, he also demanded the Government to review the current fee structure.

He said that the Government has not taken up any action on their demands although the union has been highlighting these points to the Government for the past many years.
