The issue related to alleged robbing of the son of a Chief Engineer of Minor Irrigation Department and his two friends of their money an valuables by five police commandos who also threatening them to be killed if they don't cough up Rs 5 lakhs for securing their release is likely to be snowballed if the State Government does not act and take up action against the five commandos.
Setting July 17 as the deadline, a public meeting held at Lilong Bazar today has decided to launch various intense agitation against the Government in case no action has been taken up against the guilty police commandos.
After a serious deliberation on the issue, the meeting organised Joint Action Committee Against the Waylaying, Torture and Extortion and attended by representatives of various civil organisations unanimously adopted seven resolutions.
The resolutions include to immediate withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act and termination of the involved police commandos from their service within July 17 .
Demanding immediate withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, the meeting observed that the Act has given unrestrained power to the security personnel in causing more miseries to the common people.
Decrying discrimination of people on the basis of caste and creed and violating human rights, the meeting demanded termination of the five police commandos from their service.
The meeting also made it clear that they should not be allowed to hold any Government post in future.
Demanding handing over of the money and other valuables taken from the three youths from the police commandos, the meeting resolved that it should be done in front of the people.
In case recording the statement of Md Wahidur Rahaman, one of the youths, is required, the meeting decided that it should be done before media by the JAC members.
The meeting also demanded the Government to pay compensation to the three youths for the physical and mental suffering they have been subjected to.
Maintaining that military might would not be able to suppress the insurgency movement in Manipur, the meeting urged the Government to initiate political dialogue with the UG groups.
In case of Government fails to implement these demands, the meeting decided to launch a series of intense agitation along with other civil organisations in the State.
