Imphal, July 08 2022: In the wake of the steady rise in Covid-19 cases during the last five/six days, Health Services Director Dr K Rajo has appealed to one and all to follow Covid appropriate behaviour.

Speaking to media persons at the Health Directorate, Lamphelpat today, Dr K Rajo pointed out that the positivity rate was 2 per cent at the most during the first, second and third week of June and there were days not a single positive case was detected.

However, the positivity rate started rising steadily from the last week of June till July 7.This can be seen as the onset of the Covid fourth wave, the Health Director said.

Rath Jatra celebration in the beginning of July and relaxation with regard to following Covid appropriate behaviour following remarkable improvement in the State's Covid-19 situation can be possible reasons for the fresh rise in Covid positive cases, he said.

He then appealed to all the people to follow Covid appropriate behaviour like wearing face mask, washing hands frequently and thoroughly and maintaining social distance.

Till yesterday, there were 97 active cases in the State and 73 of them were symptomatic.

While 91 per cent of them are undergoing treatment at home, 9 per cent has been hospitalised.

Most of the positive cases have been identified to be Omicron variant.

This variant is more transmissible as compared to other variants but less severe.

Till date, only one patient is treated in ICU and the patient is recovering, the Health Director said.

The first wave of Covid-19 claimed 355 lives in the State, the second wave claimed 1647 people and the third wave killed 120 people.

No one has been killed in the fourth wave till date, he said.

The department is actively engaged in testing, surveillance, treatment, home isolation etc, he said.

Although physical screening is being done at entry points, no extensive testing has been initiated.

The vaccination rate has declined but it is still going on.

There is no shortage of ambulance, oxygen cylinders, PPE kits and other materials.

Due preparations have also been made to re-open CCCs if required, Dr Rajo said.

It is a matter of grave concern that some teachers and students have been found Covid positive in certain schools.

An advisory was issued earlier in case Covid positive cases were detected in schools, Dr Rajo said.
