Imphal, December 06 2011:
Difficulties and inconveniences encountered by Myanmarese and Indian officers during interaction on different matters have been greatly reduced after 30 Myanmarese officers have been given spoken English education under the sponsorship of the Government of Manipur.
An official source informed that the proposal for teaching English to Myanmarese officials was put up by the Government of Myanmar during a border liaison meeting held in October this year.
Responding to the proposal, the Government of India sent some English teachers from Manipur and they taught English to 30 selected Myanmarese officials for one month in November.
Earlier, it was very difficult to communicate and interact between officials of the two neighbouring countries though bilateral meetings were held at regular intervals, informed the official.
The English teaching programme was organised by the State Academy of Training.
The Academy sent two English teachers to Tamu where the Myanmarese officers were given class on spoken English.
The English speaking course was participated by officers of Myanmar Town Planning, General Administration Department, Customs, Narcotics, Intelligence and police officers.
The concluding function of the English speaking course was held at Tamu DC complex on December 2 where State Academy of Training Additional Director M Joy was also present.
The Myanmarese officers who participated in the English speaking course were elated on gaining the ability to speak English.
They further conveyed desire to their Indian counterparts for organising a similar course of three months.
Teaching English to Myanmarese officers would go a long way in smooth implementation of India's Look East Policy as well as the transborder trade through Moreh and Tamu.
Incidentally, the number of sanctioned items for Indo-Myanmar trade is at present 40 .
