The State Government should take up special measures for providing food to monkeys of Mahabali Forest considering their deteriorating conditions owing to lack of food by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The above statement was made by P Saratchandra, general secretary of MPCC while feeding the monkeys with fruits and sweets in the vicinity of Hanuman Mandir at Mahabali yesterday along with the members of Heingang BCC.
In a video released to media, P Saratchandra said that due to curfew and restrictions imposed by the State to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, the devotees coming to Hanuman Mandir have reduced to a large extent thereby leading to deprivation of food to the monkeys.
He continued that Delhi High Court have approved of feeding the stray dogs in Delhi considering their deplorable condition and the Prevention of Cruelties to Ammal Act 1960 is being implemented in the country to prevent any act of cruelty against the birds and animals.
Stating that the Government is providing free ration to the people across the country under schemes like NFSA and PMGKAY to alleviate the hardships faced by the masses due to COVID-19 pandemic, similarly the Government should take up initiative to provide regular supply of food to birds and animals around us, he added.
Lastly P Saratchandra appealed to the State Govt to take up measures to arrange food for these animals at the earliest amid the grim situation of COVID-19 pandemic.
