Imphal, February 16 2015: Daniel Leivon Lamkaang, bureau chief, Sanjivani Medical Times NEI has apprised the Union Home Minister of the need to promote medicinal plants which are found abundantly in the NE region during the Minister's visit to the State on Feb 14 at the Raj Bhavan.

Daniel highlighted to the Union Minister about the need to promote ayurveda or ayurvedic medication, which was very popular among the forefathers before the onset of allopathic therapy.

On the other hand a two-day National workshop on 'Sustainable development of medicinal plants sector in North East India' was opened today at RIMS Jubilee Hall under the aegis of Forest Department and National Medicinal Plants Board.

Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga who attended the inaugural function as chief guest stated that Manipur is indispensable for India to forge friendly relationship with countries of South East Asia.

He categorically stated that Manipur is India's gateway to South East Asia.

In addition to high-ranking officials from all the North Eastern States, representatives of multi-National companies like Dabur, Charak Pharma, Sami Lab, Natural Remedies etc are participating in the workshop.

Saying that he recently attended a conference held at New Delhi with foreign diplomats working in India, the Chief Secretary conveyed that the conference focused on development of the North East region.

The Government of Manipur has already opened a separate department of AYUSH and construction of its office building is on the verge of completion.

Guest of honour of the inaugural function and former Governor of Chattisgarh Sekhar Dutt spoke about the longevity of Japanese people because of their preference for traditional medicine.

In his presidential speech, AYUSH Secretary Nilanjan Sanyal noted that different varieties of medicinal plants are found abundantly in the North East region.

Many experts later spoke on different topics related to broader theme of the workshop during the technical session.
