MU hosts seminar on women in unorganised sector

Manipur University vice-chancellor Prof N Lokendra has highlighted contributions of women in driving social, economic, and political changes in Northeast India during a one-day national seminar on "Women in Unorganised Sector: Challenges and Prospects in North East India".
Organised by the university's department of sociology and sponsored by the National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi, the seminar was held on Friday at the university's court hall.
In his address as chief guest, Prof Lokendra emphasised the unique social landscape of Northeast India, where distinct differences exist between hill and valley communities.
He pointed to Khwairamband Ima Keithel, Manipur's iconic all-woman marketplace, as a powerful example of women's historical involvement in the region.
Acknowledging the contributions of women's organisations in both the hills and the valley in driving social changes, he highlighted the importance of exploring how women continue to effect change across social, economic, and political spheres in the region.
The seminar was attended by Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi director Prof Manisha Tripathy Pandey, Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Tiningpham Mon sang, former chairperson Dr Binota Meinam, and Dean of MU School of Social Sciences Prof Dr T Purnima.
During the event, a book titled 'Cultural Landscapes of South and South East Asia, edited by Dr T Deepamanjuri Devi and Soibam Nepola, was also released.
