Imphal, June 08 2014:
As part of the World Environment Day observance, an event christened Green Sunday was held today at MBC Centre Church, Chingmeirong.
MLA DK Korungthang graced the function as chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, he said that God gifted Earth with bountiful natural elements like air, wind, water, trees and animals so that human beings can survive and prosper on the planet.
But mankind cannot exploit these natural resources in sustainable manner which has resulted in serious ecological imbalance.
Questioning how could man survive when there are no trees, plants and animals.
Rather than planting trees, human beings have been indulging in unrestrained deforestation activities.
Saying that plants and animals are essential for human survival, Korungthang exhorted the gathering to plant more trees and conserve nature including animals.
Planting tree saplings is not enough, it must be ensured that the saplings grow up to maturity.
Climate change has seriously affected seasonal rainfall pattern which in turn has bred adverse impacts on agriculture and agricultural productivity.
The Green Sunday event also featured a music competition on the theme of environment protection which was followed by a children eco parade.
