Imphal, June 24 2024:
Assam Rifles foiled bid to smuggle massive quantity of contraband items in Tengnoupal district on Sunday at the check posts at Bongmol and SL Zougam, by intercepting five vehicles carrying 109,000 cigarette packets and 4096 liquor bottles hidden beneath grocery goods.
A detailed search of the vehicles was carried out and entire seizure along with 12 individuals and five vehicles were handed over to Machi police station, informed a statement issued by PRO IGAR (S).
Meanwhile, sources informed that based on specific input from across the border that a large number of contraband items are being transported into Manipur through the Tengnoupal border sector, security forces established a mobile vehicle check post on Sunday afternoon.
The values of the confiscated items would be over Rs 50 lakh in the international black markets.
The demands for foreign cigarettes and liquor are very high in Manipur from where these items would be smuggled into the neighbouring states including Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
The seizure and arrests were made at a time when the state is facing a turbulent time due to the communal violence that broke out on May 3, 2023, losing 230 lives.
