Red Shield Gunners, 44 AR celebrate Vijay Diwas

Imphal, December 16 2022: To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the 1971 war, a solemn Vijay Diwas function was organised at Albert Ekka War Memorial, Lichu Bagan in Agartala by Red Shield Gunners.

According to PRO (De fence), the day commenced with a wreath laying ceremony in the honour of all those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation during 1971 war.

Wreaths were laid by Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha, station commander of Agartala Military Station, Sector commander of Assam Rifles, Rajya Sainik Welfare Board chairman and war veterans.

Later, a cultural evening with patriotic fervour was conducted at Albert Ekka War Memorial to commemorate the day jointly organised by Tripura government, Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala and Indian Army.

In his address, Dr Manik Saha remembered about 1971 war and roles played by valiant people of Tripura.

He also praised the role of Muk-ti Jodhas who fought alongside Indian Armed Forces to achieve their dream of a free Bangladesh.

During the programme, Manik Saha also felicitated 1971 war veterans in recognition of their invaluable service to the nation and school children who bagged prizes in a painting competition organised for children on December 11 to commemorate the historic day.

It may be mentioned that 1971 war has its own special significance as it remains one of the shortest successful war ever fought.

The conflict started on December 3 in 1971 and within 13 days, Pakistan was brought to its knees.

It resulted in splitting of our enemy into two halves and giving birth to the sovereign and proud nation of Bangladesh.

During the operation, Indian Armed Forces forced surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops.

The operations ended on December 16 at Dhaka after the unconditional surrender of the Pakistani forces.

The historic day is being celebrated every year as "Vijay Diwas" in India and "Bijoy Dibos" in Bangladesh.

44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector also organised a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial constructed by the Bn at Thillon village, COB Azuiram as part of Vijay Diwas celebration.

In a release, PRO (Defence) informed that the event was aimed at spreading awareness among the locals regarding the importance of Armed Forces and invoke the feeling of patriotism.

The unit is constantly working towards spreading a progressive view about the security force and the nation among the locals.

Working on the same, the unit has been supporting local students by conducting coaching classes for admission to Sainik Schools, it added.
