Environment Day observed, fellowship distributed to scribes

Imphal, June 05 2023: Directorate of Environment and Climate Change on Monday observed the State Level World Environment under the theme "Solutions to plastic pollution", at its Porompat office in Imphal East district.

As part of the observance, award letter for Media Fellowship on Climate Change Reporting for the year 2023 were dis-tributed to select scribes namely The People's Chronicle sub-editor Ngangom Suraj Kumar Singh, Impact TV asso-ciate editor Joyshree Usham, Imphal Free Press Tamenglong correspondent Daniel Kamei, Imphal Review of Arts and Politics reporter Ksh Chitrabhanu Devi, ISTV reporter Ningthoukhongjam Sanajaoba Meetei, Echel Express reporter Waikhom Chitradhani Devi; The Sangai Express reporter Ng Liklaileima; Imphal Free Press Ukhrul correspondent Ricky Angkang, Imphal Free Press reporter Rk Tayalsana and Sanaleibak daily reporter Maibam Kenedy Singh.

Delivering the keynote ad-dress, Environment and Cli-mate Change joint director Dr T Brajakumar stated that among other conflict, the conflict between man and environment is more com-plicated.

He said that despite observing the World Environ-ment Day for the last 51 years across the globe the effective-ness of observing the Day is still an issue for discussion.

While pointing out impor-tance of plastic in human lives and the harmfulness of random disposal of the same, Brajakumar said that con-sumption of micro and Nano plastic particles contaminated food can cause serious threat to human health such as can-cer and heart failure.

The theme for World Envi-ronment Day has also focused on "solutions to plastic pol-lution" under the campaign "Beat Plastic Pollution" so as solicit attention of all in solving the problem of plastic pollution, Brajakumar said.

While pointing out that Pol-lution Control Board, MAHUD and Municipality Corporation are working to control pollu-tion under Manipur Plastic Policy 2022, Brajakumar ap-pealed to the public to shoul-der their responsibilities in tackling plastic pollution in Manipur.

The programme was also attended by Imphal Free Press chief editor Irengbam Arun, Imphal Review of Arts and Politics chief editor Pradip Phanjoubam and Editor s Guild president Khogendra Khomdram among others.

Tree saplings were also dis-tributed to the volunteers of Manipur Adventure Allied Sports Institute (MAASI), Keirao, as part of the pro-gramme.
