JNIMS observes National Organ Donors' Day

Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat and Mohan Foundation jointly observed National Organ Donors' Day on Sunday.
The observance was marked with the pledge to donate organs and a walkathon participated by JNIMS teaching and non-teaching staff, medical and nursing students and families of organ donors from City Convention Centre, Palace compound till the JNIMS administrative block.
JNIMS director professor Usharani, director (health services) Dr Chambo Gonmei, JNIMS medical superintendent Dr Kh Lokeshwar, deputy MS, head of departments, nursing staff and Mohan Foundation's North East coordinator Laishram Monik and members took part in the walkathon.
Speaking on the occasion, JNIMS director professor Usharani informed that the main objective of National Organ Donors' Day observance is to create awareness to people on donating vital organs after death so that lives of patients m need of organ transplantation could be saved and new lease of life ensured.
She said that organ donation is considered the greatest gift of an individual to the human society and the observance aims to spread mass awareness on organ donation.
The director also appealed to the people to have awareness on donating-organs to save lives of others.
Director (health services) Dr Chambo Gonmei also said that death is inevitable for human beings but there is no other noble work for a human being that giving new life to another by donating organ.
He also strongly called for respecting organ donors and their families.
Meanwhile, JNIMS urologist Dr Shole said that 8 lakh people require organ transplants in India every year but lives of majority of them could not be saved due to lack of organ donors.
However, organ transplantation has been witnessing an increases in the country from 13,000 in 2023 to 18,900 in 2024 .
Along with increase in the number of donors, more patients in need of organ transplantation have been emerging, he said adding that an individual can give new life to eight people with organ donation.
Later, a pledge was taken to donate organs while families of deceased organ donors were honoured with simple gifts.
