RIMS inaugurates Sports Medicine ward

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, on Tuesday, observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, alongside organising a Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programme, and the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Sports Medicine ward, towards bringing excellence in healthcare, education, and inclusivity.
RIMS marked a milestone with the inauguration of a 10-bedded Sports Medicine ward by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, in the presence of head (in-charge) of the Sports Medicine department Dr Yumnam Ningth-emba Singh, and chief nursing officer (i/c) N Ibemhal Devi.
The Sports Medicine Centre at RIMS, the only one in Northeast India and one of eight nationwide, is recognised for its adherence to 'National Medical Commission standards and its vision for excellence in healthcare and sports medicine, said another statement issued by RIMS media cell.
Prof Sunil Kumar expressed pride in the department's growth, noting plans for a Sports Medicine course, super-specialty development with 80 faculty posts, and major infrastructure expansions, including a 500-bedded super-specialty block and a 750-bedded general hospital.
These plans, with a proposed investment of over Rs 3,000 crore, aim to establish RIMS as a national leader in sports medicine and healthcare, the statement added.
The department of physical medicine & rehabilitation (PMR) observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme "Amplifying Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive & Sustainable Future".
This global observance, held annually on December 3, underscores the importance of building an accessible and inclusive society for individuals with physical and mental challenges.
The event was attended by RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, medical superintendent (i/c) Dr M Rameswar, dean (academic) Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam, and head of PMR department Prof L Nilachandra Singh, informed a statement issued by RIMS media cell.
In his address, Prof Sunil Kumar emphasised the need for accessible healthcare services for people with disabilities and called for enhanced policies, infrastructure, and awareness to integrate them into mainstream society.
The event included cultural performances by persons with disabilities, distribution of prizes and gifts, and active participation from senior officials, faculty, staff, and students of RIMS.
The director also highlighted the PMR department's role in supporting individuals with disabilities, noting its position as one of the best centres in the country.
In another statement, RIMS media cell informed that the department of paediatric and preventive dentistry organised a Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programme at Banting Hall in connection with National Pedodontist Day.
The programme, attended by RIMS faculty, staff, and students, was led by Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam and Principal of Dental College, RIMS, Dr B Praveen Reddy.
Dr Reddy emphasised the dedication of paediatric dentists in providing specialised care for children and highlighted the importance of continuing education for professionals to stay abreast of advancements in dental technologies and techniques.
The programme featured a presentation by Principal of KSR Institute of Dental Science and Research, Tamil Nadu, Prof Sharath Asokan, who spoke on the oral health of paediatric patients and innovative learning methods through online CDE programmes.
He stressed the importance of equipping children with the knowledge and tools to maintain their dental health into adulthood, reinforcing the role of ongoing education in improving paediatric oral care.
