Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykisan provided financial assistance to RC Mangangcha, a staff reporter of Impact TV, who was assaulted by a police sub-inspector while covering a protest rally of displaced persons on August 1 .
The MLA visited the journalist's Keirao Bitra Lairembi Leikai residence on Monday to personally hand over the assistance.
Apart from the personal assistance, Joykisan also handed over a sum of Rs 64,000 to recover expenditure incurred in the journalist's medical treatment and loss of his mobile phone during the incident, as assured by chief minister N Biren.
The CM had asked him to deliver the compensation on his behalf while visiting the journalist, the MLA said.
Joykisan expressed his concern over the safety and well-being of journalists and pledged to extend assistance to journalists in times of injury or hospitalisation as part of his broader commitment to uphold the rights and safety of journalists, who play a vital role in democracy.
RC Mangangcha was assaulted by a police sub-inspector while covering a protest by displaced persons earlier this month.
The assault resulted in injuries to the journalist and his mobile phone was also damaged.
