EPCH launches skilling programme for artisans

The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) launched Comprehensive Skill Upgradation Program (CSUP) on 'Lasyngphee' craft at Haoreibi village, Imphal West on Monday.
The five-month training programme aims to enhance the skills of local artisans, refine their craft and expand their market opportunities.
The programme is supported by the office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) under the National Handicrafts Development Program (NHDP) - Skill Development in Handicraft Sector (SDHS) scheme for the financial year 2024-25.The inauguration of the CSUP programme was attended by 30 local artisans, who will undergo extensive training on preserving traditional methods and integrating modern practices to meet current market demands.
It is part of a larger effort to develop India's handicrafts sector by equipping artisans with the skills and knowledge needed to compete in a global marketplace.
Those who attended the launch event underscored the significance of the programme for the local community and the broader handicrafts sector.
As chief guest of the function, Manipur Khadi & Village Industries Board (KVIB) chairman N Nimbus stressed the need for skill development in preserving the state's cultural heritage and commended EPCH for its efforts to align traditional craftsmanship with contemporary market needs.
He expressed that investing in the skills of artisans would ensure that the traditional crafts not only survive but thrive in today s competitive market environment.
In their addresses as the guests of honour, Handicraft Service Centre senior assistant director (Handicrafts) Mutum Sanjeev Kumar, and Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles project director L Dasumati highlighted the importance of CSUP programme in enhancing visibility and marketability of local crafts on national and international stages while Mutua Museum director Mutua Bahadur emphasised the essential role of cultural preservation in maintaining the unique identity of the state's diverse communities.
He called the CSUP initiative as a pivotal step in empowering artisans and promoting the region's rich cultural heritage.
The cultural identity of Manipur is deeply tied to its crafts, he said and added that the programme not only supports the artisans but also helps preserve the cultural uniqueness for future generations.
Meanwhile, EPCH designer Maibam Surjamala elaborated on different activities of EPCH in the North Eastern Region (NER) and highlighted the council's ongoing efforts to support and promote the rich handicraft traditions of the area.
She asserted that EPCH will ensure that local artisans have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.
