Imphal, August 20 2024:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 80th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as Sadbhavana Diwas at Congress Bhawan, here, Tuesday and paid rich floral tributes to his portrait.
Regarding the observance, former chief minister O Ibobi Singh said that Sadbhavana Diwas is being observed throughout the country on Tuesday to remember the youngest PM of the country.
He recalled that Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister of India after his mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards.
Rajiv Gandhi not only had keen interest in politics but was also farsighted as could be comprehended from prioritising advancement in science and technology during his time that eventually resulted in the country joining the global race for technology-centric development, he said.
Noting that India had friendly relations with all its neighbouring countries, Ibobi also inferred that the Non-Aligned Movement initiated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM of the country, helped the member nations promote peace.
India also opposed expansionism/ aggressive policies of powerful countries which tried to usurp economically underdeveloped neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
When LTTE launched an intense armed movement to create a state from Sri Lanka, Rajiv Gandhi strongly called for stopping such movement in the neighbouring country and even helped in protecting integrity of the neighbouring country.
However, Rajiv Gandhi was killed by LTTE using a human bomb and such inhumane killing was condemned by the global community.
Today, Rajiv Gandhi is being remembered as a global leader and his birth anniversary observed as Sadbhavana Diwas, Ibobi added.
