Imphal, June 20 2013:
A day after Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh announced in the State Assembly on the possible steps taken to construct a separate shed for street vendors, Khwairamband Keithel Lambi Mataida Potpham Phamliba Lup (KKLPPL), a body of women street vendors in Khwairamband, has appealed the Chief Minister to provide plots at the unoccupied floors of the three market sheds of Khwairamband.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club, Potsangbam Shamasakhi, President of the Lup, said that street vendors who are struggling to earn their livelihood are subjected to daily harassment by police and traffic police.
The Chief Minister's assurance for constructing a market sheds at Lamphel Sanakeithel and Tombisana High School ground would rather be a trouble for street vendors as less number of people throng at these areas, she pointed out, while explaining the reason why they have rejected the initiative to construct market shed away from the business hub of the city.
Sticking to their demands for allotment of plots at the unoccupied areas of three Khwairamband markets, Shamasakhi warned that if the Government failed to consider their demand, they may be compelled to resort to severe forms of agitation.
