Eye Operation Theatre opened

An eye operation theatre was opened today by Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing under the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) .
Eye surgery particularly cataract operations would be performed at the OT opened today in the office complex of the Central Mobile Opthalmic Unit, State Programme Officer.
People who require eye surgery as detected in different eye camps which would be held across the State under the NPCB State Programme Officer would be brought to the OT for operation.
The inaugural function of the OT was attended by Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing as chief guest, Health Director Dr A Bijoy as president JNIMS, Department of Opthalmology Head Dr RK Babisana and senior Opthalmologist Dr Yumnam Bajao as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Phungzathang said that construction of buildings for Churachandpur and Bishnupur district hospitals is nearing completion but a lot of medical equipment are yet to be procured .
Dr A Bijoy appealed to the concerned authority to assign adequate number of eye surgeons and staff for the OT opened today so that people can reap full benefits.
NPCB Manipur State Programme Officer Dr Kh Kaminikumar said that of all the district hospitals of Manipur, only Tamenglong and Senapati districts hospitals have facilities for eye surgery.
Nonetheless, 4500 numbers of eye operation were performed in the State during the past two years.
Of all the eye operations performed under NPCB, 40 per cent were done in private hospitals and 60 per cent in Government hospitals.
Still, 18000 people of the State require eye operations.
Shija Hospital managing director Dr Palin, Sky Hospital director Dr L Shyamkumar and many eye specialists were also present at the function.
Later, doctors and staff who took part in eye camps held under NPCB, were felicitated.
