Langol, April 30 2013:
For the first time in Manipur, Department of Neurosciences, Shija Hospitals has successfully performed a type of advanced neurosurgery known as surgical cerebral aneurysm clipping.
A cerebral or brain aneurysm is a cerebrovascular disorder in which weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery or vein causes a localized dilation or ballooning of the blood vessel.
Previously such patients had to go outside the state for treatment because of inadequate treatment facilities in Manipur.
Apart from huge expenses, patient and patient parties are sure to experience lots of inconveniences while travelling to faraway places for treatment.
The groundbreaking surgery was performed by a team led by Dr.Ch.
Gautam, MCh (neurosurgery, CMC - Vellore), Consultant Neurosurgeon, Shija Hospitals on 16-04-2013 .
On 15-04-2013, a patient from Lilong Chajing Mrs.Lotongbam Mombi Devi, 60/F and W/O L.Jugindro was brought in Shija Emergency and Trauma Centre in an unconscious state.
On further investigation the patient was found to be suffering from cerebral aneurysm.
Aneurysms may result from congenital defects, pre existing conditions such as high blood pressure and atherosclerosis (the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries), or head trauma.
Cerebral aneurysms occur more commonly in adults than in children but they may occur at any age.
They are more common in women than in men, by a ratio of 3:2.Known risk factors for aneurysms include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and hypertension.
Onset is usually sudden and without warning.
Rupture of a cerebral aneurysm is dangerous and usually results in bleeding into the meninges or brain itself, leading to a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) or intracranial hematoma (ICH), either of which constitutes a stroke.
Before a larger aneurysm ruptures, the individual may experience such symptoms as a sudden and unusually severe headache, nausea, vision impairment, vomiting and loss of consciousness.
It is also worth mentioning that Shija Hospitals is empanelled by the Govt.of Manipur as a referral centre for neurosurgical treatment.
