Imphal, August 26 2024:
The proscribed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) clarified that Laishram Thoiba of Thanga Khunjem Leikai was awarded light punishment in connection with the unnatural death of his wife Sophia in 2016 .
Thoiba, it may be mentioned, was found shot on his left buttock at Moirang Khunou Primary School, Khongnang Lambi Awang Leirak on August 24 at about 2.40 pm.
According to a PREPAK statement, Laishram Thoiba Singh (28), son of L Iboyaima Singh was given light punishment by shooting on his left buttock for killing his own wife by hanging.
Prior to awarding the punishment, Thoiba was picked up from his house by Special Task Force-1 of the outfit on August 23 evening.
During questioning in custody of the Special Task Force-1, Thoiba confessed to committing the crime but punished with comparative leniency on humanitarian ground and in view of condition of his family, the statement said.
Recalling the incident, the PREPAK statement issued by its publicity officer Mangal Khuman said Thoiba married Ningthoujam Ningol Sophia, daughter of N Shamjai of Thanga Salam Leikai, in February 2015.After sometime, Thoiba along with his parents traded off all the gold jewelleries brought by Sophia and began to harass her.
Apart from harassment, Thoiba pressed his wife to bring money from her maternal home and threatened to kill her if not complied with.
Due to their strained relationship, Sophia returned to her maternal home multiple times but eventually decided to return to her husband as it is against norms of the society for a married woman to stay at maternal home.
On February 25, 2016, Thoiba's family spread fake news in the locality that Sophia was found dead hanging from a 'Yongchak' tree growing near their house.
Thoiba's neighbours informed about the incident to Sophia's family.
Surprisingly, it was found that the tree branch from which Sophia purportedly hanged was easily breakable.
Despite rainfall on that day, there was no mud/dirt on Sophia's body and cloth while post mortem report indicated severe torture with injury marks on her head, neck and back.
After relevant police station registered a case regarding Sophia's death, Thoiba was sent to jail but released after about a year.
As PREPAK does not belief in Indian judiciary system, party cadres scouted for Thoiba but he went hiding.
He was finally picked up by the Special Task Force-1 on August 23.Based on the report of the fact-finding team, Thoiba was awarded light punishment, the outfit said, adding that Thoiba confessed to strangling Sophia in collusion with his family members.
